Students learn differently. Some are primarily visual learners while others are more auditory. Some students are new to a subject while others already know the basics. To be effective, study materials need to be personalized to each student's individual learning style and level of knowledge.
Study tools should also "evolve" with a student's level of knowledge. They should direct the student to those areas in most need of review, while fading out the materials already mastered.
Textbooks, class notes, and published outlines or flash cards are GENERIC and STATIC. They are designed for use by students of all different learning styles and abilities, and they do not change as the student learns.
